Ferdinand Ongania 1842-1911

Was director of the celebrated Venetian bookshop Hermann F Munster in St Mark’s Square. He used the the heliogravure process, which meant that pictures could be reproduced photomechanically, to create a series of important books portraying the city, its people and their daily life, and its art and architecture. Calli e Canali in Venezia (Streets and Canals in Venice) was published in the 1890’s.
